final project idea:
Idea Public Schools
For this week’s assignment I decided to recreate one of Nassos Daphins’s art pieces. I was introduced to Daphin’s work back in high school and decided that his work was ideal since his work is geometric abstraction.
For the randomization aspect of the piece I plan on making sure to randomize the colors of the piece.
For my midterm project I decided to do something close to home. I decided to focus on a store in Mexico that went from selling cd’s to becoming a full tourist shop.
El Disco Super Center is a family-owned business both in Mexico and Texas. It’s a store that throughout the years has gained popularity in both sides of the border. A store that initially started off as a music store has shifted throughout the years to grow and sell a range of products. Everything from candy, textile, saddlery is sold in both stores.
As this business has grown throughout the years, unfortunately the branding has not. It has stuck with the same logo that is used to represent everything that the store has to offer. I decided that I wanted to take three key things that are sold and create individualized logos for each one.
The first logo that I did was based on the music aspect of EDC. This was the beginning of El Disco (hence the name in Spanish). Although, vinyls and CD’s are no longer sold at the store it was what my great-grandmother first sold and I wanted to bring that to life. For all three logos, I decided that I wanted to focus on the three colors that are used in the original logo. The text was of course was not done procedurally, I used PS to create the text.
For my second logo I decided to take from the original logo of the little musician and make it a bit more minimal. I decided to keep the sombrero and the mustache and have it created in the Mexican flag colors. The mustache was the most difficult part, and included me looking up pictures of mustaches for a while. (lol) I think that a logo like this could be used when loading something on their website and have each little sombrero pop up. This was probably my favorite of the three since it is still has the original logo intact.
Lastly, I decided to create a logo for the candy aspect of EDC. Again, I really wanted to have very minimal logos. I think that this logo could be used as stickers on the packaging of the traditional candy that is sold at stores.
Overall, I was quite satisfied with what I created. Moving forward, I think that if I could continue working on this for my final I would want to create more logos for everything that is sold in stores. Little icons that can either be used on their website or for any other aspect of their branding.
For my midterm project I decided to do something close to home that I could potentially pitch to my family at some point.
Background: El Disco Super Center is a family-owned business both in Mexico and Texas. It has a “distinct inventory that includes everything from jewelry, saddlery, sterling silver, etc” this business was created by my great-grandmother and has been passed down to her children who are expected to pass it on to their children at some point. A store that initially started off as a music store has shifted throughout the years to grow and sell a range of products.
Idea: As this business has grown throughout the years, unfortunately the branding has not. It has stuck with the same logo that is used to represent everything that the store has to offer. I decided that I wanted to take three key things that are sold and create individualized logos for each one.
Nobody’s Business Alan Berliner
Documentation Response: I think that one thing that particularly stood out to me from the documentary was the way that Alan takes on the structure of the documentary. From the beginning of the documentary he does a great job of bringing this story about his family and presents it to the audience in a unique way. The little details such as the noises used when switching from picture to picture. As well as the sound effects when showing videos, it would give the audience the suggestion that this was of course a memory. The transitions of the documentary are also done very well. For example, when Alan and his father are arguing I like that he begins to play the reel of a boxing match. Again, I think what made this stand out more then other docs was the little details that Alan brought to life. It made such a difference and made me really enjoy watching this.
Assignment for Wednesday: Come up with an idea for a typeface that you can create in code. It only needs to be able to spell out a short word, so you don’t need to think about all the characters. Draw it in a notebook and post a picture of it + a short paragraph on the documentation blog.
So for this weeks assignment I decided to stick with the idea that I came up with in class on Monday. I don’t know what word I want to write out yet but I know that this is the typeface that I want to be able to recreate in code. I don’t feel like it’ll be that difficult to recreate, but we will see how it goes! 🙂
For this assignment I decided to a simple code that showed a raindrop to represent wet and a triangle to represent sharp. It wasn’t difficult to create the triangle but it was a bit more difficult trying to get the rain drop to align the way I wanted it to.
