# Rhino- 3D- Computer Aided Designs (CAD)

Mid-Term Project

Name: Mehr Un Nisa Javed

Date: 9th April’2019

Professor: Marcela Godoy

Objective: Create a program which makes 3D objects using Grasshopper and Rhino.

Process:

I initially started from this flower which was not an enclosed shape. For this what I did was that I made three circles and then I tried to change their radius and manipulate them into a shape. This is a very famous Islamic pattern shape which I really liked and took as an inspiration for my mid-term project. Initially, I proposed for my midterm project about making a mosque however, it was not very feasible because it firstly, it was hard to turn it into a paramedic design and secondly since it’s such a holy place so I didn’t not want to play around with it.

Here is a photo of my initial shape:

This flower had a lot of small gaps in the centre which are not clearly visible on the photo above but there were which hindered me to add volume to it therefore, I took help from Marcela and asked her for ideas in order to improve the shape. She was very helpful and spent a lot of time in order to fix the several issues I encountered and also helped me to understand the core of them.

These are the few parametric designs I played with and then I got a suggestion to make them look as if they are carved and maybe for better understanding and view I was suggested to change the view settings. Also, I extruded the curve and Marcela helped me to extrude more curves because she said if I wouldn’t do that then if I 3D print then there would be nothing (design) shown and only outer lines would appear which is surely not my intention to do.

I played more with shapes later on and was able to get some cool design for carving on a wooden block.

My final output looked like this: We were supposed to have 10 different images (screenshots) demonstrating the variability of the parametric object I created. Therefore, I changed their radius, divide curve counts, scale, extend curve feature etc to gain 10 different designs.

Here is a photo of the output:

Grasshopper Code Explanation:

The shape which I created is a combination of two hexagons, two squares, four triangles which would help make the geometric pattern (star pattern). The size of the central star must be well balanced including the shapes surrounding it. In order to create this pattern in an easy version what I did was that first I created three circles and out three sliders with their radius so that they could be altered in alter to vary the shape at the end. Since the three circles I created should be of different sizes for example, one should be the biggest then the two inside should be smaller than the bigger outside one and each other. For this I also added the scale factor for scaling. With the scale factors geometry I joined the divide curves curve and then with the help of Marcela I added the cull pattern to create the star. For that I added the true and false feature so that the lines wouldn’t overlap and there would be a gap between each number. Then , I also added the extend curve feature so that the curves could extend and go out towards the outer circle and then joined the extended curves with the curves of the end point. I also added the shift list feature with the lines and then finally, merged the lines , first divide curve of the circle and the last shift list. Then, I offset the curve with a specified distance by joining the offset with the join curves curve thing. After that, I added boundaries surface which helps to create planar surfaces from a collection of boundary edge curves. I joined this with the offset. Finally, I did extrusion. Extrusion is very vital as it Extrude curves and surfaces along a vector. The vector I set was Unit Z. This was I exuded the boundary surfaces and by a similar way I extruded using Evaluate Surface.

Improvements:

I got some really great suggestion by my fellow colleagues who suggested me to give some purpose to it. For instance, make these designs be a necklace/pendant which would be very useful and can be used by a lot of people no matter if they’re interested in keeping it as an islamic pattern or not. I really appreciate the great suggestion I got and would continue working on them in order to give a meaning to my design. Eventhough, I made a spherical based and put the design on it (can be seen on picture 1 above) so the design could act as a carving. But, I would really want to take my design further and turn it into a daily life object.

# Finding Alternatives to Plastic

Name: Mehr Un Nisa Javed

Date: 11th Dec’ 2019

Professor: Marcela Godoy

Objective: Final Project Documentation

Website name: Remade in China Fall 2019

Project Title: Working towards finding sustainable alternatives to Plastics

Why make a Website? Motivation behind it?

I basically created the website because I feel like in the second part of the semester our main shift was on the Bioplastics and I basically found them very cool and a great alternative to the regular plastics. I saw that students in my class were doing some really cool experiments about the Bio-plastics so I thought it would be nice to have a place where we could keep their projects and experimentation safe and also, people outside from our class would be able to seek helps from our class work, comment on our projects and also if they get stuck while doing something we would have a chat box where they could send photos and we would be able to instantly reply (one of the student from the Remade in China class).

I also saw other websites about the Bio-Plastics and found out that they did not have the chat features, experiences of the people, and challenges section so I thought our class website having those would be really cool.

Why make a magazine or basically experiment with it?

I thought that it would be really nice to have a website for the digital part and the magazine for the physical part but then, Marcela suggested me that it would be better to not focus much upon that because earlier people have worked on that and it does not differentiate your work a lot from others so then I thought that it would be better to just keep on working on the website(digital) part.

Project Statement:

Research:

These are the three websites about the bioplastics which were most popular about internet. I basically researched the most about bioplastics because I am interested more towards them and even in the website I included more experiments on the Bioplastics.

https://www.bioplasticsmagazine.com/en/

/biomebioplastics.com

www.thinkbioplastic.com

Experience:

I really enjoyed working on this and I think I was one of those people in the class who sort of gained the most from the final projects because in order to incorporate into the website I nearly read all of my colleagues works and their failures and success. I think that was pretty fruitful.

I also think that this layout of the website can get really successful due to its features and especially the minimalistic design which this website has.

Photos from Class Presentation of the Final Project:

On the above photo you can see the flyers which I made for promoting our class work especially based on the Bio-Plastics. In future, as discussed with Marcela we plan on printing our class flyers on the paper made by Joyce. The paper she made is recyclable paper so it would be nice to promote something about sustainability on something created based on the idea of sustainability.

Also, you can scan the QR code on the poster in order to direct to our website. this is the QR code which I have added below and you can also see it on the poster.

Website features which makes it different from other websites:

1. It is a student based website working specially in China so it would cater the Chinese students studying at other universities and also the people who just want to experiment with the bioplastics.
2. It has a chat box feature which would get the people experimenting using our website instant replies if we are online at that time or they could leave a message which we would reply soon. They could also send the attachments of where they went wrong to us and we could see and respond to their queries.
3. I also have the Events section where they could find out about the recent events happening in Shanghai or all over in China but they would be initiated by the Remade in China students or faculty.
4. I also added the new section which leads to the monthly newsletter. I want us all to have something to produce a newsletter produced on monthly basis so the people outside the class can see our progress and can look into the new experiments which we have conducted and also in that newsletter talk about the experiments which we want to get done by the next month so that the website audience can anticipate what they will see next month.

Here are some of the photos of those features which I really like:

Failures:

I think for me the magazine was a big failure because it did not turn out to be the way I had thought it would turn out to be or at least the impact it would create was very different from the one I had thought of.

I also wanted to code the website fully by myself but I just coded unto a certain point and then I started to have a lot of coding challenges therefore, I resorted to the online website making solution.

I think a lot of people really appreciated my website and found it very interesting. But, one feedback about the “login option” and about the layout really struck me and I would like to work on it in the future.

Next steps:

Today we took a class group photo (on the last day of the classes) and I think on the homepage background I would add that photograph because I think it would give it a more class touch and that’s one improvement I would bring to it by the feedback we received.

Improvements which I have made after receiving the feedback on my website:

Now you can see that I have added the button at the top of the website for adding information and also for the signup so that people can signup and become a part of it and add their words and make comments etc.

Also, I received the feedback that this does not look much of a class website so in order to give it more of our class remade in China touch I add the photo from one of our workshops as the website background page.

Conclusion

Overall, I really enjoyed doing this project and overall, the entire semester. I feel like I learnt a lot in this class in terms of moving towards more sustainable ways, changing our daily practices, trying to become a more environmental friendly person and trying to love planet more than what we do as of now because we create a lot of trash through our daily chores.

I hope my website is able to reach to a larger audience and more people could work upon it so that it could be improved with further critique. In future I also hope to add a set criteria for adding the posts etc to the website so that the good quality posts could only be found on the website. Overall, I really enjoyed working on my idea and I just hope I can expand more on it in the future and add up more of my individual experiments to it as well.

Note: I have made a separate post named as “Final Experimentation” which included I did also the experiments I did in order to reach the final result.

# Final Project Reflection (Chen)

Project name: “Shanghai Time Machine”

Professor: Ann Chen

Date: 12/14/2018

Documented by: Mehr Un Nisa Javed

Concept: The concept behind my Project is to show the modern and old Shanghai. The modern Shanghai is depicted as the Shanghai in 2018 as it is a mega city now and the old Shanghai is the 1990’s Shanghai. People will have an actual interaction through a humanly creature which they can move in order to explore the city.

Process: I used different tools to cut , edit, crop the video such as giphy and iMovies. In order to get the transparent background of the pictures I used LunaPic.

Heres how pictures look with the transparent backgrounds:

I have put the picture of bund on top of the table using the tool FotoFlexer.

I made the transparent background of pictures using LunaPic:

This is the sprite I made for the project:

Here’s a video of my Project:

What I learnt from the project:

1. If I see my first HTML website and this then I surely feel I learnt a lot throughout the semester. I have learnt different ways of interacting through this by using CSS and Java. Also, I learnt how to use different editing tools.
2. I learnt how to incorporate the videos into the pictures
3. I learnt how to make the character walk back and forth
4. I also improved my video making skills
5. I also learnt how to turn the pictures into videos
6. practiced video editing
7. practiced playing with pictures
8. used audacity

Explanation of the code:

I used this part to set the position of the frames I made for different locations and I also placed the name tags of the pictures.

I used this part for setting the right and left key movements.

This is how I set the text.

Sources:

Most of the videos and pictures were shot by me but I took a few from different open sources by the permission of the publishers. I also took some help from online tutorials for the coding and interaction part.

Inspiration which I used for the Project:

https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2013/08/26-years-of-growth-shanghai-then-and-now/100569/

The other day I was reading this article by “The Atlantic” which really fascinated me and inspired me for my final project.

The Rise Of New Shanghai

This article “The Rise of New Shanghai” also really inspired me for my project as the main question posed by the author in the article was that “Does Shanghai belong among the greats?” like the great cities such as New York and London.

Therefore, in my project I tried my best to make a comparison of how Shanghai turned into a mega city within a short time span.

Improvements for the Projects:

• make the sequence loop instead of ending it

• Include more times other than 2018 and 1990 as it would convey more of the time machine/movement concept

• The “We[Heart] Shanghai” text overlaps the videos so fix that

• The character is too pixelated so I would try to fix it in future

# Internet Art Project – UPDATED-

Concept

The concept of my final project is basically to recreate the Cinderella story midnight scene for my users. It would be interesting as I would change the midnight scene and give the user a unique experience of making Cinderella want the type of shoe they want to by the hands of the prince. The reason why I want to recreate that scene is because the gist of the entire Disney story lies in that scene because in the original Disney version what happened was that Cinderella, the beautiful and kind-hearted daughter, sees her world turn upside down when her beloved mother dies, and her pained father remarries another woman, the wicked Lady Tremaine, who has two equally cruel daughters, the jealous Anastasia and Drizella. But, once more, things will go from bad to worse, when Cinderella’s father, too, dies, leaving her all alone in the Lady’s clutches to serve as her maid-of-all-work. Under those circumstances, a shabby and neglected Cinderella doesn’t stand much of a chance of attending the King’s royal ball–let alone, captivate the handsome Prince–unless she turns to her loving Fairy Godmother who has quite a few tricks up her sleeve. Finally, Cinderella makes her way to the ball, but the fairy godmother warns her to back before midnight otherwise she would turn from a fair into a shabbily dressed girl.As Cinderella dances with the Prince she sees the clock and it’s about to tick to 12:00 and she runs down the stairs but, in this hurry, she left her one sandal. Now, I am basically trying to recreate this scene because No Disney film has been more wardrobe-driven than Cinderella, and most of the plot elements involving clothing and shoes were added by Disney which I read somewhere also fueled criticism that the studio turned the classic fairy tale into a bourgeois, capitalist fantasy.

Concept

The concept of my final project is basically to recreate the Cinderella story 12 am scene for my users. I am very certain that most of my classmates know about the story of Cinderella, so I would not need to go in depth of it. It has been my all-time favorite and certainly of a lot of other people as well. Therefore, for my final project I will work on the shoe part where Cinderella left hers.

Sources:

Th sources of the project will be the Cinderella Book and an audio most probably recorded in my own voice. I think it would be better if I record in my own voice and a mans (prince) voice. However, I feel like if I use some audios in the original voices then it would be good as well.

# Response to the Readings (Chen)

Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age:

I really liked all the ideas which were put forward by the author. However, one about school really struck me which was that the school system mostly uses baby sitting system. Children do not have to inherently wait until age 18 to learn about tough concepts such as calculus. Teenagers have been productive in production and creation, from apprentice to creative activities such as hacking (which is quite difficult for the teenagers too), when they are unshackled from the school system’s dictated pace. This idea shook me from the illusion people placed on doing well in school – which is set at learning paces for perhaps an imaginary medium learner but would not work for all. Instead of providing children opportunities to learn at their own paces, school is increasing becoming a turtle race. Even if you excel at the race and you are still a turtle, then you definitely did not learn more about your self, and hence, did not get a chance to produce unique things.I feel like we should let everyone free to produce unique stuff and too through “learning by doing”.

Computers, Pencils and Brushes:

The essay discussed the use of the computer in terms of design. Moreover, it was discussed by the author that  “the language of the computer is the language of technology, not the language of design”.Moreover, he talks about the advantages of the device as he states that it is a time saving device. Further, he adds about how the computer fascinates a lot of users as they play for the entire day on the device. However, he further asserts that this definitely leads to the diversion of the people from the real design of the device. Moreover, he adds more disadvantages such as students do not hand draw and instead they prefer to user computers which definitely deprives them from an important skill of drawing.

# Video Project (Chen)

Name: Mehr Un Nisa Javed

Professor: Chen

Date: 20th November ’2018

Partner: Alex and Jiayang

Objective: Work in three to create a Video project using camera, html, Java ,CSS and audio files.

Project Title: “Interactive Juice Making Session”

The video on this project link hangs a bit probably because of the high quality of video. Therefore, during class presentation I used my own laptop.

How it was working in a a group of three? I would say it was extremely hard for me to work on this project as at some points I felt like I was the only one interested in working on this project which made me quite offended as well. The two of the people whom I was working with said that they had no experience of coding and did not even listen to my ideas of making a video differently as I said during the beginning and in my first post which was interviewing different people and asking them about their perspective of Americans (considering the Business Insider article in mind). Moreover, only incomplete videos were sent to me and I had to work on them editing them, and adding stuff to it and also only some of them videos and audios were sent to me which were no even complete. This made it extremely hard for me to work on making an interactive website and that too in just two days and they took about 2 weeks to make a video which was a lot. However, I still worked hard for this project so that it could be actually completed in time considering that I was only sent video clips and the type of videos which were sent to me.

Process:

Getting clips, trimming them, editing their brightness and variance etc, joining them with other clips, making an interactive html website for that using css and Js.

What I learnt from the Project?

I think at the end of the day it was quite fruitful for me as my coding skills improved a lot and I got to know more above play pause video functions. I also linked quite a lot of pages so it was also interesting. I did most of the video editing so it was fun too considering I had no experience of video recording and editing before that.

Am I Satisfied?

I think to some extend I am satisfied with the project because I worked very hard for this project completing and considering that my partners were mostly least bothered and found the easy way out.

What Improvements can be done to it?

I think more could’ve been done to the audio of the project as the initial idea was to copy the “Perfect Human” audio but the audience did not like it much.

I think on the first page of the video project more could have been added in terms of signals where the users could pick the fruits.

The video angles could’ve been improved as a better use of camera can definitely improve the project

Here are some images of the Project: (Some random shots from the video project)

You can see from the picture that there are three fruits. You can choose any one of it which would lead you to its juice making session. You can play and pause it by clicking the button. It would hopefully give a more immersive experience.

Title of the Video Project: “The Danger of a Single Story”

Partners: Alex and Jiayang

Concept:

We have read about the article The Danger of the Single Story for the weekly blogpost and we really liked it as it talk about how some people make judgments which are not based upon the facts instead they depend upon what people have heard only (which is not always true). Thus, we want to break those stereotypes and talk about them.

Our story will be based upon one of the major mistake people have about American people which is that “Americans are loud, arrogant, and entitled”. We found this from an article on Business Insider where a person travelled to 24 countries and figures out the 5 common mistakes about Americans. Here is the link to that article: https://www.businessinsider.com/american-stereotypes-travelers-hear-abroad-2018-1
